*Example only, using the 72.5¢-per-mile IRS standard rate in effect at the start of 2026. Rates change, sometimes mid-year — MileAudit values each drive at the rate for its date. Good to know

General information, not tax advice. Rules depend on your situation — confirm with a qualified tax professional.

  • The IRS expects records of each business drive's date, destination, business purpose and miles, kept at or near the time of the drive (IRS Publication 463). MileAudit captures the drive as it happens; you add the purpose.
  • Driving between your home and a regular workplace is generally commuting, not business. Trips from one business location to another, or to meet a client, usually are business.
  • You can usually choose the standard mileage rate or your actual car costs. To keep the option of the standard rate, it generally has to be used in the first year the car is used for business.
  • Parking fees and tolls for business trips can be deducted on top of the standard mileage rate — keep those receipts too.
